Settings by scenario

A task-oriented map of KMReader settings: what to change, when to change it, and what happens next.

Updated View as Markdown

You do not need to tune every setting. Keep the defaults unless you have a specific goal, then use the recipes below. Options not available on your platform or server simply do not appear.

On iPhone, open Settings with the gear on the Dashboard. On iPad and tvOS, use the Settings tab or sidebar entry. On macOS, use the KMReader menu → Settings.

Start with the result you want

Read manga in spread form

Go to Settings → DIVINA Reader:

  • Preferred Direction: choose Right to Left, or leave your preferred direction as a fallback and let series metadata decide. Force Default Reading Direction ignores that metadata for every book.
  • Page Layout: Auto pairs suitable pages; Dual forces two-page presentation; Single always shows one page.
  • Solo Cover Page: keeps the cover out of the first story spread.
  • Split Wide Pages: Auto divides landscape images into halves; Scroll keeps each spread whole and pans across it.
  • Show Page Shadow: turn it off for a seamless-looking spread.

See Reading for the per-session equivalents in the reader ⋯ menu.

Read long strips comfortably

Choose Webtoon while reading, then adjust:

  • Webtoon Page Width: reduce it if full-width artwork feels too large; increase it for fewer margins.
  • Webtoon Tap Scroll Height: reduce it if taps skip too far ahead.
  • Image Preloading: use Fast Page Turns if scrolling frequently waits for images; use Low Memory if the device struggles instead.

Make small text or low-resolution pages clearer

In Settings → DIVINA Reader → Image Processing:

  • Border Cropping removes empty margins. Conservative is the safer starting point; Aggressive trims more aggressively.
  • Waifu2x Mode → Auto upscales pages that need enlargement. The Auto Trigger Scale Threshold controls how selective this is: lower means more pages are processed, higher means fewer.

These options change displayed images, not the original files on your server.

Read novels with fewer distractions

For EPUB, choose Settings → EPUB Settings → Reading Flow → Scrolled for continuous reading, or keep Paged and select a transition. In EPUB Theme, adjust colors, typeface, margins, line height, and other typography. Enable Advanced Layout only when the simpler controls are not enough.

A theme changed through Current Book applies only to that book. Save presets for combinations you reuse, and use Reset to Global to return a book to the shared theme.

For any reader, you can hide the persistent page number or progress bar, disable automatic keyboard help after learning the shortcuts, and turn off tap-zone hints.

Pick the right PDF engine

Keep Use Native PDF Reader on for text-heavy PDFs, especially when you need search or a table of contents. Turn it off for comic and manga PDFs that benefit from DIVINA’s reading directions, transitions, and image processing.

Native PDF Page Presentation → Auto uses dual-page continuous mode in landscape and single-page paged mode in portrait. Choose an explicit mode when you do not want orientation to change the layout.

Avoid accidental reading progress

Use Settings → Reading → Record Progress After. A higher threshold gives you more page turns to back out of an unread or finished book without recording progress. Choose Immediately only when you want every actual page turn recorded right away. Books already in progress continue to record every turn.

For a one-off session that must not record progress at all, open the book with Peek instead of changing this global setting.

Download for travel without filling the device

Use manual downloads for a fixed selection. Use Unread Only with a limit for ongoing series or read lists, and leave All for sources you genuinely want in full. Keep Auto Delete Read Books off if you re-read downloaded books; turn it on when automatic reclamation is more important.

See Offline reading and sync for cover sync, manual offline mode, PDF quality, and progress reconciliation.

Make page turns faster or reduce memory pressure

Use Settings → DIVINA Reader → Image Preloading:

  • Low Memory for constrained devices or very large pages.
  • Balanced for normal use.
  • Fast Page Turns for smoother rapid navigation when you can spare more memory.

If the problem is network latency rather than decoding, preloading cannot remove it entirely. Explicit downloads or Offline-first Reading are the better solution for unreliable connections.

Free storage

Check Settings → Cache before deleting downloads. It shows page- and cover-cache usage separately and offers current-server or all-server clearing. Lower the maximum sizes for automatic maintenance, or extend Cover Expiration when covers rarely change and repeated downloads are undesirable.

Downloads are managed separately from the Offline page. A large cache can improve responsiveness, but it is not a guaranteed offline library.

Make search broader or narrower

Keep Settings → Browse → Search Ignores Filters off to search within the current filtered view. Turn it on to search the entire library even while that view is filtered.

To reduce visual noise, the same settings page can switch cards to cover-only or text-overlay presentation, hide series titles on book cards, and disable unread badges or progress bars. Blur Unread Covers obscures unread artwork; it does not change read status or recommendations.

Reduce dashboard noise

In Settings → Dashboard, hide sections you never use and drag the rest into your priority order. A section header’s card-style menu controls only that section. Show Card Style Menu controls whether those menus are visible, not the card choices already made. Section backgrounds can also be turned off independently.

Control refreshes and notifications

Settings → Real-time Updates has three separate levels:

  • Leave Real-time Updates on to receive server events.
  • Turn off Auto-refresh Dashboard to receive events without having them refresh the dashboard; manual refresh still works.
  • Turn off Show Notifications to silence connection and task-completion messages while keeping real-time updates themselves.

Disabling Real-time Updates turns off the underlying server connection, not just visible notifications.

Use Apple integrations selectively

In Settings → System Features:

  • Enable Browse Handoff when you move between library pages on different devices.
  • Enable Reader Handoff only if you also want reader sessions handed off.
  • Enable Spotlight Indexing to find downloaded content from system search. Choose books, series, and libraries separately to keep results focused.

In Settings → Appearance, Privacy Protection obscures app content when the app goes into the background, such as in the app switcher. It does not change reading history; use Peek for that purpose.

Adjust networking only when necessary

The default request, download, and authentication timeouts suit most servers. Increase them only for a demonstrably slow server or connection. API Retry Count can ride out transient failures, but more retries also mean a real failure takes longer to surface.

Where options take effect

Location Scope
Settings → Reading Shared behavior across DIVINA, EPUB, and PDF: offline reading, progress, continuation, screen, and Live Activity options
Settings → DIVINA Reader / PDF Reader / EPUB Settings Persistent reader defaults and engine-specific behavior
Settings → EPUB Theme The shared EPUB theme; Current Book creates a per-book override instead
Reader ⋯ menu Session navigation and layout controls, plus reader settings and translation
Page rotation Current reading session only
Peek Current reading session only, with no progress recording

For model packs, providers, source/target languages, text direction, and translation privacy, continue to Manga translation.
